WHAT IS HYPNOTHERAPY?

Hypnotherapy as a contemporary tool for growth and healing is an increasingly accepted therapeutic therapy in the western world.

The roots of hypnosis are lost in the abyss of the ages. However, the human race has always explored altered states of consciousness.

Our ancestors knew many of the keys that open the gates to a different reality, such as fasting, meditation, sleep deprivation and even dance, as we have witnessed in the ecstatic states achieved by the whirling dervishes of Turkey, Haitian voodoo dancers, native American ceremonies, Indian yogis and fakirs, Persian Magi and Christian mystics such as Anthony of Padua and St. Therese of Aviila. All have made use of trance states - which is what hypnotherapy - healing while in a relaxed state - simply put, is.

Modern hypnotherapy is used both independently of, and in conjunction with, traditional medicine, on the belief that the conscious, awake mind is mind, and that true healing can only occur once the awake and alert part of the brain has been placed in a meditative, relaxed state, thus allowing the sub-conscious to communicate and release old emotional blocks and patterns.

WHAT IS PSYCHO-SPIRITUAL HYPNOTHERAPY?

Clinical hypnotherapists tend to deal with present time issues, such as reframing, peak performance, emotional and physical pain and habit control - in present ways, to varying degrees of success, depending on the awareness of the client and skill of the hypnotherapist.

Psycho-Spiritual Hypnotherapy works on the premise of Origin Therapy - that is, to trace the present day issue back to its very beginning. This can often mean beyond this lifetime into other lives. It is irrelevant as to whether a client needs to believe in past lives or reincarnation, in fact, a sceptical client will often successfully regress to a former life as there is the relaxed expectation that nothing will happen!

On a deep, interactive level, issues of loss, grief, pain, death and self-esteem can be worked through on a powerful spiritual level, in areas not normally utilised by traditional hypnotherapists. For instance, a client who has experienced the loss of a baby (either through miscarriage or abortion) can find profound the experience of resolving her grief and guilt in the afterlife, face-to-face with the soul of her child.

Such a concept was unheard of two decades ago. Now, Interlife Therapy (the space between lives) as a hypnotherapeutic tool, is widely used in the USA and Europe, although there are only a handful of experienced hypnotherapists who do interlife work in Australia.

WHAT DOES THE TRAINING INVOLVE?

Because much of the focus of current Australian hypnotherapy training is on the traditional, this course is easily one of the most extensive trainings in the country. The 65-hour course is run over 1-4 sessions of 3 or 4 days at a time throughout the year, offering students a chance to focus and work as part of a group study intensive.

This training also includes clinical aspects such as Ethics, Marketing and Legalities of being a hypnotherapist to best ensure our students work with integrity and awareness, once certified.

Students experience a range of practicums in addition to theoretical study. Graduation is dependent upon the student's attendance and skill in the regular induction sessions, and examination results of practicum – usually done and observed by myself during a training day. Interstate students can also forward a DVD of a private session in which they are confidently demonstrating their knowledge of the ‘flight plan’, use of positive suggestions, and a good awareness of the use of pace, tone, auditory-visual-kinesthetic techniques, with a grounded sense of flexibility and intuitive process.

Currently, the two major Hypnotherapy Association bodies in Australia neither work beyond the clinical field nor recognise any other training that focuses primarily on past life or origin therapies, no matter how intensive or historical. Fortunately, in order to practice as a Hypnotherapist or Relaxation Therapist in Australia, it is unnecessary to be a member of any Australian body at present. However, the clinical aspects of this course could be counted towards these associations' membership hourly requirements, and membership is accepted within a number of larger international organisations who do recognise the advanced nature of these training modules, in addition to ASOCHA.

STEPS TO BECOMING A HYPNOTHERAPIST

1. You receive a package containing your comprehensive training manual and
3 training CDs, as you and I work through the clinical aspects together.

2. Then we meet for face-to-face work, at a time that is arranged between myself and the students. This ensures that I observe your abilities and suggest extra methods to deepen your professional experience.

3. You spend time working with various people in your life, ideally not family (as they tend to ‘hide’ deeper truths on a sub-conscious level from loved ones).

4. When you feel ready, send me a full hypno session demonstrating your skills in the pre-hypno interview, the actual session and the post-hypno completion. Alternatively, you again meet with me face-to-face at no extra cost, until your confidence increases.

All students have a window in which to successfully graduate of 8 months from the start of your face-to-face training.

INFORMATION FOR INTERSTATE STUDENTS

Some of my hypnostudents like to stay at Edwil House Bed & Breakfast as it is just a few minutes taxi ride away from the training venue.

Training is also a few minutes drive away from the main south-side city centre of Woden, which offer a number of hotels.

Occasionally, members of my volunteer team of The Spirituality Church of Canberra offer to accommodate students in need.

From airport: a taxi ride of about 15 mins - fare is approximately $35.

For those wishing to gain a full certification in Clinical Hypnotherapy, do contact any of the national bodies of Hypnotherapy for recognised training in this field. It is believed that some of your training will be recognised. They may not cover all the above aspects, however, they are currently accepted as adequate.
